The Emotional Experience of Jealousy

jealous eyeJealousy is experienced as more than just a simple emotion.  Rather it is: a complex or gestalt of  an emotional episode with a complex mental narrative; the circumstances or triggers that lead up to jealousy; jealousy itself as emotion; the attempt to suppress or self-regulate; subsequent actions and events and the resolution of the episode.  The mental narrative can originate from experienced facts, thoughts, perceptions, memories, but also imagination, guesses and assumptions.

For me the sensation or physical feeling when I concentrate on it in my emotional body is of a ball of energy or fire in my abdomen, as well as a constrictive feeling in my chest.  If I separate the sensation from the accompanying mental narrative (my ego) the sensation in and of itself is not unpleasant, its just very intense, but I could even interpret it as potentially pleasant.

How do I separate it you may well ask?  I have been working methodically over the years down my own spiritual pathway to enlightenment (yes I know it is not a destination and is present right now).  Over the years I have been able to quiet down my ego more and more and subsequently have had increasing episodes of no-mind or no-thought.  One of the techniques is to focus on either your emotional body, or your presence.

OK I apologize – I am getting even more tangential – I recommend to anybody reading this site – please go and buy The Power of Now and if it changes you which it will The New Earth after wards both by Eckhart Tolle.  If any of you want more information on spiritual matters after that then please write to us.

Anyway the bottom line is that without the arising energy/emotion/sensation becoming associated with the thoughts there is no suffering.
